The Impact of Sustainable Land Management Practices on Household Welfare and Determinants among Smallholder Maize Farmers in South Africa

This study investigated the impact of Sustainable Land Management Practices (SLMP) on smallholder maize farmer’s welfare in Gert Sibande District Mpumalanga Province South Africa. Farmers’ is paramount to agricultural development and rural vitalisation, especially sub-Saharan The aim identify factors that influence adoption SLMP assess its net farm income. A multivariate-probit (MVP) model was used analyse determinants adopted an efficient endogenous switching regression (ESRM) estimate income farmers. MVP results show household socio-economic characteristics institutional statistically influenced choice SLMP. Subsequently, pair-wise correlation matrix revealed complementarities among all implemented by Similarly, ESRM treatment effect indicated average farmers who were significantly higher than group did not. Consequently, recommended support policies farmers’ demography, farm-based characteristics, improve promote vitalisation.
